The new trapeze hook
New quick release trapeze hook
It's innovative, it's simple, it's effective and it will save lives. A new Quick Release Trapeze Hook has been invented by international skiff sailor and sailing coach Raimondo Tonelli. It has been developed and manufactured by Sea Sure and is now in production.
The device incorporates a simple patented pull release mechanism that immediately detaches the hook from the harness in a critical situation. No custom made harnesses or expensive changes to the rig are required. A special retaining clip means you won't be released from your harness unless you want to be released. The harness wearer will also carry spare hooks at all times. The design of this simple failsafe device was prompted when Raimondo Tonelli lost a friend who died when trapped by a harness. There are other tragic accounts of how sailors have been drowned when they have been snared by a fixed harness hook in a capsize situation. In high performance craft a sudden wipeouts can have serious consequences and some modern boats don't create air pockets when inverted. Cold water shock from immersion can trigger physiological reactions that aggravate a panic situation due to entrapment. But with the new hook, pull a pin and away you swim.
Engineers at Sea Sure have been researching a safer trapezing system for some time. Meanwhile Raimondo Tonelli had been thinking 'outside the circle' to come up with this ingenious solution. "All previous mechanisms and concepts that we'd be looking at retained the hook in some form," explained Sea Sure MD Graham Brown."Mechanisms are vulnerable in salt water because they can jam, they're expensive and if they're complex they might not work," Graham added. "Raimondo looked at it from a different view point and said we don't care if you lose the hook. The new device offers the ultimate engineering solution. The clever bit is that it's so simple."The new Quick Release Trapeze Hook has undergone rigorous testing, both on the water and at Sea Sure's Warsash factory. High impact load testing was conducted on the retaining pin. It is so strong that the harness hook, formed on an eighty-ton press, will straighten before the pin breaks.
The Sea Sure Quick Release Trapeze Hook can be fitted to any sailing harness and has had an extremely positive response from major harness manufacturers and sailing holiday companies. The system is inexpensive so any increase in harness prices should be minimal. The Cost is around £ 50 and can be purchased from all good chandlers and mail order firms.
Sea Sure has agents worldwide for the distribution of this product.
